2nd Street Streetscape Improvement Project 2025

The City’s contractors continue to make strong progress and are currently completing electrical work, installing streetlights with festoon holders, and finalizing landscaping. The project remains on schedule for full completion before the end of May.
 
2nd Street Construction Status (from Sanford Avenue to Oak Avenue):
• Sanford Avenue to Palmetto Avenue: 93% Complete.
• Palmetto Avenue to Magnolia Avenue: 88% Complete.
• Magnolia Avenue to Park Avenue: 76% Complete.
• Park Avenue to Oak Avenue: 79% Complete.

2/3/2026  2nd Street Streetscape Project Update:  PROGRESS!

The City of Sanford is pleased to report continued progress on this block-by-block 2nd Street Streetscape Project.  The 2nd Street block, between Park Avenue and Oak Avenue, is just entering the demolition stage of construction.  However, customer access to downtown businesses will be maintained.  Overnight construction work will also occur, as needed, to maximize both customer access and continued construction progression.

Current Construction Status:

  • 2nd Street, from Sanford Avenue to Palmetto Avenue:  93% Complete.  Lightpoles and landscaping improvements still in progress.
  • 2nd Street & Palmetto Avenue intersection:  100% Complete.
  • 2nd Street, from Palmetto Avenue to Magnolia Avenue (East Side):  88% Complete. Lightpoles, wiring, and landscaping improvements are still in progress.
  • 2nd Street, from Magnolia Avenue to Park Avenue and Park Avenue Intersection:  75% Complete.
    • 2nd Street and Magnolia Avenue intersection is open.
    • 2nd Street & Park Avenue intersection is approximately 75% complete, with the brick paver road installation underway.  Reopening expected before the end of February!  
  • 2nd Street, from Park Avenue to Oak Avenue:  41% Complete.   The construction teams are:
    • Removing concrete and electrical boxes – completion expected early February.
    • Preparing the road base to bring the road up to grade – completion expected mid-February.
    • Installing concrete curbs, gutters, driveways, and parking spots – completion expected by late February. 
    • Repairing and re-concreting sidewalks – completion expected by mid-March.
    • Installing brick pavers, wiring and lightpoles – completion expected by the end of March. 
  • Feston Lighting on 2nd Street, from Sanford Avenue to Oak Avenue – completion expected in April.
  • Entire 2nd Street Streetscape Project – completion expected by the end of May.

Update as of 11/13/2025

Update: Road Closures and Traffic Detours

Please be advised that the Magnolia Ave. intersection will be closed. Local traffic and deliveries should use the alley between Palmetto and Magnolia, with access available from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Streets.

Additionally, 2nd St. will remain open for local (non-through) traffic from Palmetto Ave. to Magnolia Ave. This change will take effect tomorrow, and all other road detours will remain unchanged.

Update as of 9/30/2025

The 2nd Street Streetscape Project is progressing well with more than 30% complete with final completion expected before Labor Day in 2026.

Phase 1, between Sanford Avenue to Palmetto Avenue, is 80% complete

Phase 2, between Palmetto Avenue to Magnolia Avenue, has begun with completion expected by the end of November.

Phase 3, between Magnolia Avenue to Park Avenue, is expected to begin early November and end by February.

Phase 4, between Park Avenue to Oak Avenue is expected to begin in January and end by April.
Final cleanup and presentation to our City residents is expected by the end of May

The 2nd Street Streetscape Project is progressing. There have been some rain delays and as with old infrastructure, utilities issues. 2nd Street between Sanford Avenue and Palmetto is open and we are waiting on the landscaping, light poles and electrical to finish up. The anticipated time for the concrete and brick work to be completed between Magnolia Avenue and Palmetto Avenue in Mid-November. The next phase will entail the intersection at Magnolia to Park Avenue which will take approximately 3 months. All of this is tentative barring there are no issues.

 

Update as June 2025

The City of Sanford will begin the 2nd Street Streetscape Project in June. This project, spanning Sanford Avenue to Oak Avenue, involves making the roads ADA-compliant, relaying bricks, increasing the availability of parallel parking spaces, installing new light fixtures, and enhancing electrical outlet options for vendors and food trucks. 2nd Street Streetscape Improvements City of Sanford

Jeff Davis, Project Manager for the Public Works Street Division, has shared exciting news about the upcoming 2nd Street Streetscape project, scheduled to begin in June 2025. This transformative project aims to revitalize the area with essential road improvements. The plan includes adding more parking spaces to make life more convenient for residents, installing additional electrical outlets, relaying brickwork for a polished look, and upgrading the area with new lighting fixtures.
