Golf Cart Operations

Golf Cart Operations in the City of Sanford

An Annual Golf Cart Registration is required in the City of Sanford.  Golf cart registrations expire on January 31st of each year and must be renewed annually.

The only exception to the City’s annual registration is for carts legally defined as “Low-Speed Vehicle (LSV)” who will obtain registration through the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles department or the County’s Tax Collector’s office.

Golf carts operating on the roadways must follow all of the same traffic laws as a regular vehicle, and are subject to the same penalties (citations, warnings, or criminal charges) including:

  • Golf cart operators must be at least 16 years of age and licensed.
  • Infants through age three must be in a federally approved child restraint device, and children four to five years of age must be restrained with a seat-belt.
  • Operating an unregistered golf cart on the roadway is a criminal traffic offense.
  • Operating a registered golf cart outside of the permitted zone is a criminal traffic offense.

Required safety equipment –  Your cart must have these to pass inspection:  Headlights, brake lights, taillights, turn signals, windshield, efficient brakes, safe tires, reliable steering, rearview mirror, and reflex reflectors warning devices on the front and rear.

Initial Registration:

To register your golf cart with the City of Sanford for the first time, please follow these easy steps:

  1. Complete the on-line Application and pay the $25 registration fee. [Note – Personal account is required, but the same login works for other City services such as park and pavilion rentals, sports registrations, etc.]
  2. Bring the following to City Hall,at 300 N. Park Avenue for inspection by a Community Service Officer, on a Thursday, 8 AM – 5 PM (or as posted):
  •  Your payment receipt (or pay in person)
  • The golf cart itself
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Proof of ownership (bill of sale, title, or affidavit if applicable)

Upon a successful inspection, you will be given a registration sticker to place on your golf cart which will be valid until December 31 of that year.

NOTE:  If it more convenient for you, you may print the application (see below) and bring it with you to the inspection, pay the registration fee in person and then receive your registration sticker. Cash payments can be received Monday – Thursday in City Hall.

Annual Registration Renewal:

Subsequent registration of your previously inspected and registered golf cart is required annually. Registrations expire on January 31 of each year.

An online registration renewal link will open in November so you can renew early and conveniently. Enter your existing registration number and pay the $25 fee online. Instructions for picking up (or receiving) your new registration sticker will be provided at that time.

You may also renew in person year-round at the City of Sanford Utilities Department (300 N. Park Ave.) by bringing your registration number and paying the $25 fee. The golf cart does not need to be present for renewal.
