Mission Statement

To provide effective and efficient administrative support to the City Commission in accordance with Statutes, Charter, Code and City Commission directives. To provide information to the public, and to process public requests in a fair, impartial and efficient manner.

City Clerk

Traci Houchin was appointed as City Clerk on March 12, 2018.  She is a Master  Municipal Clerk and Florida Certified Records Manager.  She is a member of the Florida Association of City Clerks and the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. Having been employed with the City of Sanford since 2013, she has served as Deputy City Clerk prior to her appointment as City Clerk.

Commission Updates:

  • Commissioner Patrick Austin has been re-elected for a four-year term to serve as the District 3 Commissioner and has been appointed as the Vice Mayor for 2025.
  • Claudia Thomas has been elected for a four-year term to serve as the District 4 Commissioner.

Redistricting

The City Charter of the City of Sanford, accordingly, requires the City Commission to redesignate the boundaries of each district after each decennial census conducted by the United States Government.

In January 2022, The City of Sanford created a Redistricting Committee to formulate recommendations for proposed City Commission districts based on the 2020 Decennial Census. The redistricting Committee has met in accordance with the direction of the City Commission, evaluated the materials provided, considered the applicable law, interacted with City staff and developed a redistricting plan.

On January 24, 2022, the City Commission of the City of Sanford approved Ordinance No. 4658, adopting Map, Plan 1A. This map will be used in the City of Sanford district boundaries for City elections for the next 10 years (2022-2031).

2026 PRIMARY ELECTION

The Regular Municipal Election of the City will be held simultaneously with the Primary Election on August 18, 2026 and a run-off election, if necessary, will be held simultaneously with the General Election on November 3, 2026 after qualification is completed and after consultation with the Seminole County Supervisor of Elections.

COMPENSATION:    Commissioner:     Salary:  $25,881.02 annually
                                        Mayor:                       Salary:    $31,423.00  annually

QUALIFICATIONS:

All candidates and elected members of the City Commission must be a resident of and a qualified elector, not a convicted felon whose civil rights have not been restored, in the City of Sanford. In addition, candidates for Commissioner and elected Commissioners must also be a resident in the district in which the candidate runs for Commission office.

TO RUN FOR OFFICE:

To qualify to run for City Commissioner, complete and file the following forms with the City Clerk and pay the applicable fees.  Forms are available on the City Clerk’s Web Page @ Sanfordfl.gov or in the City Clerk’s Office

  • Appointment of Campaign Treasurer and Designation of Campaign Depository for Candidates [Form DS-DE9]. The candidate may designate himself as his Campaign Treasurer or Deputy Treasurer.
  • Statement of Candidate.[Form DS-DE84]

  • 2025 Statement of Financial Interests [Form 1] For further information, see instruction sheet with Form 1.
  • Pay qualifying fee by check, must be drawn on Campaign Account – Commissioner $1,019.54; Mayor $1,237.85 (City and State Election Assessment)
  • Candidates qualifying by Petition must submit certification of having obtained a sufficient number of qualified signatures (250 signatures for a commissioner; 500 for Mayor). There is a fee of 10 cents per signature or the actual cost of checking such signatures, whichever is less, to be paid to the Supervisor of Elections for the cost of verifying the signature.
  • Write in Candidates pay no fees

NOTE: Before a person may accept campaign contributions, they must first file an Appointment of Campaign Treasurer and Designation of Campaign Depository form with the City Clerk.  They are then subject to the laws governing candidates, as described in Chapter 106, Florida Statutes.  Applicable forms can be downloaded from the Elections page of the City of Sanford website and are available on-line from the Florida Division of Elections.


*It is the candidate’s responsibility to ensure that all necessary forms, fees and documents are complete and filed during the qualifying period.  No forms, fees or documents required for qualifying, or additions, revisions, substitutions, etc. will be accepted after the close of qualifying (12 noon May 26, 2026)
